Workforce Updates

Dr. Bob Nelson presented Employee Recognition at the 2018 SHRM HR’s “Got Talent” conference. The key takeaway is to reward performance, not presence. When benefits are provided to all employees, regardless of performance, it can breed a sense of entitlement, while rewarding performance, either individually or as a team, encourages even better results.  Consider reading and implementing 1001 Ways to Engage Employees or 1501 Ways to Reward Employees (with no financial cost) by Dr. Bob Nelson.
Ready to improve your workplace through employee engagement? Nominate your company for the 2019 Best Places To Work Northern Nevada. “The competition presents a great opportunity to learn what your employees are really thinking and provides you with valuable information you can use to improve your day-to-day operations and workplace environment. If chosen as a finalist or winner you can use the Best Places to Work logo on your websites and recruiting materials. Win or lose, you’ll receive your engagement survey results, plus actionable ideas for improvement.”
Promote your full-time, part-time, and internship opportunities to UNR current students and recent graduates from all majors and colleges at the UNR Fall Career & Internship Expo – November 14th.
Here is a new resource to build a pipeline of potential employees. Companies can post to find internships, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training at the new Nevada Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation (OWINN) statewide work-based learning hub (LifeWorksNV.org). The site provides access to young adults in high school, post-secondary or out of school. The hub also allows businesses and educators to learn about apprenticeships, find career technical education (CTE) schools by industry and zip codes, connect to classroom speakers and find relevant work-based learning resources.
Want to increase your number of candidates? Consider partnering, offering or subsidizing child care? Reach out to the Children’s Cabinet Subsidy Program for more information about financial assistance for eligible parents who are working or seeking employment.
