Congratulations to the Las Vegas Golden Knights,

Nevada’s professional hockey team, for winning the Pacific Division this past weekend. The Western Conference play-offs begin this Saturday and then off to the Stanley Cup Finals, if they can win the conference. The Golden Knights are just the third team since 1960 to reach the semifinal round in their inaugural NHL/NFL/NBA/MLB season and they began the season with 500-1 odds to win the Stanley Cup.  Go Knights!

The EDAWN Foundation and the Washoe County School District (WCSD) announced the winning schools in the 4th Annual Taxi-Top Design Competition. North Valleys High School, Depoali Middle School, and Jesse Hall Elementary School all took 1st place.

Each school received a check for $1,000 that will be used to purchase classroom art supplies. With a record number of entries submitted this year, there are still many wonderful designs available for a taxi-top. If you would like to sponsor one or more, at $1,000 for a year, please contact Tamera Pitts at 775.829.3700. Here are the winners:

The Union news – Clean energy jobs on rise, growing economy in Northern Nevada and beyond

Back in 2009, Nevada was on especially shaky terrain – limping among the nation’s 50 states with the lowest employment growth, at minus 7.1 percent. Eight years later, the Silver State has arguably never been more rock-solid. In fact, from 2011 to 2017, Nevada has created more than 250,000 jobs and dropped its unemployment rate to as low as 4 percent. Moreover, in 2017, Nevada had the top employment growth rate in the country, boasting year-over-year job gains at 3.3 percent, according to the U.S. Labor Department.  Here is the full article.

The EPIC Report with actual numbers updated.

Now, three years into the five year projections of over 52,400 new jobs, we are well ahead of projections as Tesla, Panasonic and Switch continue to ramp up their hiring efforts. Here are the Actual numbers graphs.

There is a housing shortage nationwide.

According to the National Association of Realtors, “Inventory of homes for sale is still well below the 6-month supply needed for a normal market and supply will ‘fail to catch up with demand’ if a ‘sizable’ supply does not enter the market.”  Nevada has one of the hottest markets for sellers.  This month, the index showed (again) that home buying demand continued to outpace the supply of homes available in January. Here is the article.

Housing remains a concern, but we are making progress:

The chart below shows the number of permits for new housing units (including apartments and condos) pulled in the past few years, compared to the goal of 6,000 per year  Note that 12 years ago, in 2005, we were over 6,700 permits.  The 6,000 units a year goal just meets the projected demand for housing, so anything short of that adds to the current housing shortage.
