Business Retention | Expansion Updates
The team visited 17 companies in May and has visited 124 companies in the past 11 months. We have assisted 74 (or 60%) in a variety of ways. We continue to advocate for internships and participation in apprenticeship programs, and encourage companies to collaborate with K-12 Education, Community Colleges, Private Colleges, and Universities to help students build the skills needed to succeed in the diversified Northern Nevada economy.
Through company visits, we are able to educate companies about resources and programs that might be of benefit, refer companies to potential suppliers, customers and partners, connect companies with education resources to support their business, share information about available incentives, and discuss workforce retention and attraction strategies. BREW works with the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) and Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) on an ongoing basis to help identify transportation issues and opportunities. Don’t forget that RTC offers a variety of shared ride options, and My Ride To Work offers private transportation services for employees.
Workforce Updates
We are often asked what EDAWN is doing to help with workforce development. We’re glad you asked! We are engaged in a variety of workforce efforts which include getting unemployed and underemployed into education and workforce pathways, co-leading the Workforce Consortium with The Reno-Sparks Chamber, working with education and employers to make sure training matches in-demand job needs, promoting workforce grants, and promoting the region outside the state as a great place for a career. Retention issues? Since most employees leave their direct supervisor, rather than their company, consider sending your Supervisors to the ongoing training series being offered by the Nevada Association of Employees (NAE). Find out more about The Supervisory Skills: The Fundamentals training series starting July 11th, 2018.
Faced with a growing shortage of skilled workers? Investigate creating an apprenticeship program for in-demand jobs. As part of the region’s work-based learning efforts, new apprenticeship programs and occupations were approved, including Nevada’s first Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program. Other partnerships are in the works, such as a Buyer-Purchasing program with MGM Resorts International, a Metal Fabricator program with C.C. Welding, and an Electro-Mechanical Technician program with H & T Nevada, LLC. You can work with local education providers to create unique apprenticeships to serve your company’s needs. Join the Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation (OWINN) and the Nevada Department of Education on Thursday, June 28, 2018 for the Governor’s Education to Workforce Summit which will focus on incorporating work-based learning and career pathway initiatives in your company. The associated LifeWorks initiative aims to connect young adults to career pathways in high-demand industries.

Partner Updates
Congratulations to WGU which held its 66th commencement June 2nd, 2018 with Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval giving the master’s ceremony commencement address. WGU will recognize over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate degree recipients, including 292 graduates of WGU Nevada, in Business, K-12 Education, Information Technology, and Health Care professions. WGU pioneered competency-based education, which measures learning rather than time spent in class. As a result, many WGU students are able to accelerate their studies, saving both time and money. Tesla is helping to grow a Skilled Talent workforce with the Tesla CCSD Signing Day. A total of 19 Clark County School District high school students signed a letter of intent to begin working full-time for electric carmaker Tesla as Production Associates. These new high school graduates will work full-time as Production Associates at Tesla’s gigafactory and continue to study at TMCC. The program will grow to 50 students entering the program annually.
Congratulations to TMCC Adult Basic Education (ABE) for their upcoming 2018 TMCC High School Equivalency Graduation Ceremony on July 20th. TMCC ABE prepares motivated adults who are laying the groundwork for further education and future success. For more information, contact Cynthia Pierrott.
The Nevada Procurement and Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) will be hosting a Small Business Matchmaker designed to match business with government agencies and prime contractors at the Depoali Middle School on June 20th. Registration is required and PTAC’s Government Contract Advisors are available to help businesses prepare for this event. Details are included in the attached flyer.
