EDAWN Business BUZZ: Companies and Higher Ed Connect on Workforce Needs
Thursday, August 11, 2011

Local companies and worker recruitment experts from our region’s university and colleges teamed up on August 11, 2011 at the EDAWN Business BUZZ economic forum to discuss ways to help companies find and recruit workers for skilled job opportunities.

Despite the 13 percent jobless rate in the Reno-Sparks MSA and 12.5 percent unemployment rate in Carson City, businesses EDAWN surveyed said their No. 1 challenge is finding skilled employees.

Higher education worker recruitment experts from the Career College of Northern Nevada, Morrison University, TMCC, UNR, University of Phoenix and Western Nevada College shared their advice on how companies can best work with higher education to find employees for positions in skilled industries including manufacturing, logistics, clean energy, etc.  And, three local companies, Wood Rodgers, Inc., Bender Group and ElectraTherm were on hand to share how they’ve successfully recruited employees, set up internships and helped shape curriculum relevant to their industry.  Among key take-aways:
  • If you're an employer of any size with workforce needs, contact any of the higher education Workforce Network experts here who can be a major resource to you.
  • If you have job openings, UNR and our colleges have online job boards available for you to post your positions.
  • Join an industry advisory committee that's offered at our campuses to ensure people are graduating with the skills you need.
