CEO Updates
Happy 2019! We’re expecting 2019 to be another exciting year. We will present our annual EDAWN update and provide an update to the EPIC numbers at our State of the Economy luncheon on February 7. Register here. Also, consider joining us at the Alliance Event on January 23rd.
Affordable/Workforce Housing is our region’s top issue. Please fill out the TMRPA’s survey on the issue as there needs to be a business community response to the question of growth and where it should be. Early responses show a strong no change, limit growth, bias. TMRPA is looking to get feedback on four different ways our community might grow in the future.
Congratulations to UNR: University of Nevada, Reno elevated to ‘R1’ Carnegie classification! As a confirmation of its continued drive forward to excellence, the University of Nevada, Reno achieved a research milestone this week – being elevated to an “R1” institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Your input is needed on the spaghetti bowl upgrades. Of special interest is the proposed option to remove the southbound ramp to the Airport. Lisa Gianoli, chair of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board, has detailed some of the Airport’s concerns here: RGJ Article and Public Comment RTAA Attachment. Public comment on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for improvements to the Reno-Sparks Spaghetti Bowl will be accepted until January 15, 2019 via e-mail at dkeller@dot.nv.gov. We will live with this decision for decades, so please take a minute to provide your input.
The EPIC Report with actual numbers updated. RCG Economics has updated the chart using the most recent census numbers with seasonal adjustments. You can see we are exceeding what many thought was an unrealistic projection of 50,000 new jobs in 5 years and have nearly hit that number in just four years. A new 5 year projection will be announced at the February 7th EDAWN’s State of the Economy. Actual numbers graphs.
Housing remains a serious concern: The chart below shows that we are well off the goal for the number of permits for new housing units (including apartments and condos). As of October, we are almost 2,000 permits short of where we should be for this year. The shortage of new housing continues to drive our housing prices up.

The most wonderful time of the year – Unless you are homeless. As we hurry through our holiday preparations: buying gifts, sending cards, going to parties, and looking for some well-deserved time off with family and friends, most of us are oblivious to the homeless in our community that have just been here “forever.” Throwing a few coins or dollars into a red kettle gives us some sense of comfort that we are doing our part, but are we?
